Extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripsy.
Extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has proved to be a revolutionary advance in the treatment of renal stone disease. It, itself, is non-invasive but may necessitate or be used as an adjunct to more invasive auxiliary procedures. The basic principles of lithotripsy, the clinical experience thus far and probable future applications are discussed.
متن کاملOutcomes of extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy in renal and ureteral calculi.
BACKGROUND Since the introduction in early 1980s, Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) became the accepted first line treatment modality for renal and upper ureteric stones. It is simple, safe and effective noninvasive procedure which can be performed without anaesthesia in outpatient basis. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of ESWL to achieve complete stone clear...
متن کاملPrevalence of diabetes mellitus after extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy in 15 years follow-up
OBJECTIVE To investigate the hypothesis that extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) increases the risk of new onset diabetes mellitus (DM) or significant changes in fasting blood sugar (FBS). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total number of 307 patients enrolled in this study. All of them had undergone ESWL for kidney stone from 1991 to 1994. In 2009, after 15-19 years, we invited patients to ch...
متن کاملDevelopment of a new diagnostic sensor for Extra-corporeal Shock-Wave Lithotripsy
Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Lithotripsy is the leading technique used in urology for the non-invasive treatment of kidney and ureteric stones. The stone is comminuted by thousands of ultrasound shocks, into fragments small enough to be naturally passed. Since the technique was introduced in the 1980 different generations of lithotripters have been developed. Nevertheless the alignment systems (X-...
متن کاملStone clearance in lower pole nephrolithiasis after extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy – the controversy continues
BACKGROUND To determine factors influencing the clearance of fragments after extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for lower pole calyceal (LPC) stones. METHODS In the period between July 1998 and Oct 2001, 100 patients with isolated lower polar calyceal calculi or= 14 years, were included in the study. Intravenous urograms (IVU) were reviewed to define t...
